Text Box: Quilling is the art of creating decorative designs from thin strips of curled paper. This age-old art of paper quilling has been around since Renaissance which dates back to about 3 to 4 centuries during the time when the small edges trimmed from the Bible pages to create simple but beautiful form of artistry.  Using simple tools, long strips of paper are tightly wound and released to form complicated and complex shapes.  This form of art was also known as "Paper Filigree". Because of how the scrapped of paper were wrapped around goose quills to create "coiled shapes", it was later known as "Quilling".

Text Box: In Victorian times, women in England gathered in dining rooms to make beads by rolling scraps of wallpaper on knitting needles. They would then string the beads on long pieces of yarn to create curtains that separated rooms. Bead making was popular in the US from 1910-1916 and then again as a “depression craft”. In the 1920’s, life was slower with no TV’s, computers, and Internet. You can make these beads from recycled scrap paper, and string them together to make jewelry. You can even take plain paper and stamp them, or draw on them or paint and also coat them with a shiny finish .

Text Box: Modern calligraphy ranges from functional hand lettered inscriptions and designs to fine art pieces where the abstract expression of the handwritten mark may or may not supersede the legibility of the letters. Calligraphy continues to flourish in the forms of wedding and event invitations, font design typography, original hand lettered logo design, religious art, various announcements, cut stone inscriptions, and memorial documents.

Text Box: Typically quilting is done with three layers, the top fabric or quilt to, batting or insulating material, and backing material. The quilter’s hand passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A straight or running stitch is commonly used. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Participants should bring a small scissors, a thimble, and a needle threader if they normally use one.

Text Box: Crazy Quilting created a stir in the 1880’s when it became quite a fad in the United States. The Japanese Exhibit in the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition inspired the crazy quilt with its asymmetrical art. In crazy quilting, irregular pieces of fabric are hand appliquéd onto a base fabric. The patches are often exotic pieces of fabric such as velvet, satin, tulle, or silk. The patches and seems are heavily embellished with lace, ribbon, or embroidery.

Text Box: Let’s do a doodle cloth and learn to do a variety of Crazy Quilt stitches. All the stitches that will be covered include: the back, cable, stem, and chevron flat stitches; the lazy daisy, buttonhole, chain, and feather looped stitches; St. George, flower, and herringbone cross stitches; bullion, colonial, and French knotted stitches; petal and tulip composite stitches; and finally combining stitches. The way this workshop is laid out, you do not have to take Crazy Quilting I but can instead just take this more hands-on embroidery stitching .
