BACK NEXT "Dr. James H. Thornley, a charter member of the Camp Meeting Association, was the first superintendent of the Ocean Grove Sabbath School and it was he who suggested to Dr. Stokes at a small building on Camp grounds, erected specially to house the junior services, would be appropriate.
His cherished desire had not yet been carried out at the time of his death in Ontario, Canada, February 12, 1889, but the idea of a Memorial Chapel to Dr. Thornley was taken up by Dr. Stokes at the May meeting of the Association that year. A committee was appointed and a building at the northwest corner of Pilgrim Pathway and Mt. Tabor Way was remodeled. The cost of the improvements, with the necessary furnishings and a small organ, was $2,774.58, all of which was subscribed soon after the place was opened for services on June 30, 1889." - Diamond Jubilee History of Ocean Grove © 1944 The Ocean Grove Times.
Today the Chapel still serves to host the Ocean Grove's Famous Children's Meetings held 9 AM daily for children up to 12 years old. The Chapel, because of its simplicity and Victorian charm has become a popular spot for weddings as well.
